Excellent ensemble novel
This is an entertaining but deep book about a group of thirty-something English ex-patriates living and working in Italy. A very affecting book about relationships, identity, sense of place and growing up. As always, Parks does a wonderful job with voices and characterization, in economical space. Wish there were more writers like him.

Geared toward Models A, but usefull for ALL hot rods
Although this book follows the construction of a Model A, much of the information is extremely relevant to all makes and models of hot rods. If you are contemplating building a hot rod of any sort, but especially a Model A, this book will be very helpful. Informative text, along with good photos make this step by step documentation of a hot rod's buildup a must have for any hot rodders book collection.

The Howls of August: Encounters With Algonquin Wolves
Published in Paperback by Boston Mills Press (June, 1997)
Author: Michael W. Runtz
Average review score:

I really enjoyed this book!
Michael's first encounter with wolves was at age 12 and he can't get enough of them. He considers himself very lucky to have been drawn to the natural world at a young age and this beautifully written book shows it. I'm not just saying this; I really like his writing style because it's so down to earth. The timber wolf has had a bad rap and it's about time we realize its importance in the natural scheme of things. Incidentally, there's a great chapter on Algonquin Park's annual wolf howl event, which is in August. Ever been to one?

Hueco Tanks Climbing and Bouldering Guide, 2nd
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (November, 1995)
Author: John Sherman
Average review score:

Huecool book!
In this book John Sherman has produced the quintessential guidebook for climbers wanting to go to the pinnacle of climbing - Hueco Tanks.

The descriptions and topos make it possible to find even the most remote climbs. The only problem might be when one area is referenced in its relationship to a previous area of which the reader might not be familiar.
But with a little patience and understanding of how the book is laid out I can't think of a better way to get around Hueco and make the most of your climbing experience.

Maneuvering through the book brings me to the introduction. While most people might skip the introduction to a book, this one is a must read to understanding Mr. Sherman's approach to the content of the book. Playing especially close attention to pages 16-20 will make navigating through the book much easier, saving the reader a lot of time and frustration.

The index or indexes are another plus. There are three - one is a typical alphabet type where one can find a climb by its name. But there are two others, one just for rope climbs and the other for bouldering problems. They are indexed according to difficulty, so if you're a 5.10 climbers can look up all the 5.10 climbs, or 5.9 or . . . .

Not every climb in the park is in the book, but then that would have taken an encyclopedia that no one would have been able to afford. With more than 300 roped climbs and nearly 700 bouldering problems there is enough in this book to keep a climber busy for a lifetime. There is also enough room within the pages (what we call white space in the publishing business) that will allow a climber to write in new climbs as they develop over time.

In the editorial department Mr. Sherman moves from railing at those who would ruin the climbing experience or ethic, to a funny (but useful) rating of plants (cactus) according to their texture: Heinous, Jingus or Casual.

This is how I would rate the following areas of the book:
Topos - Outstanding
Maps - Outstanding
Indexes - Outstanding
Photos - Excellent
Descriptions - Excellent
Editorial Writing - Excellent

In short, Mr. Sherman did an extraordinary job of opening this climbing mecca to those of us who do our hiking in the vertical mode. He has brought order to what were previously hand-me-down, word-of-mouth descriptions that, in the world of climbing, could prove dangerous to ones health.

Mystery at Glacier National Park
WOW! I ordered this book for my 10 year old daughter, but read it first. I loved it and so did she. The adventure takes place at Glacier National park in Montana with brother and sister Jack and Ashley Landon. This is a series of books that takes the duo on many adventures to the various national parks in the United States. There is always a hair-raising experience, plus the added benefit of learning about nature, geography, history and wildlife. My daughter particularly enjoyed learning so many amazing facts about Grizzleys. I highly recommend this book--not only will your child love it, but so will you!

Hyde Park, Illinois
Published in Paperback by Arcadia (01 November, 2001)
Author: Max Grinnell
Average review score:

A Fascinating Neighborhood Brought to Life
Hyde Park is one of the unique neighborhoods of our nation--it's where nuclear fission first happened, and where Mel Torme went to high school. Max Grinnell brings the history of this neighborhood to life with hundreds of well-chosen pictures, captioned with verve, and a few short essays on the development of the neighborhood. It would make a great Christmas gift for Hyde Park oldtimers, newcomers, and anyone interested in urban development in America.
